When setting up a tent, especially in the wilderness, careful site selection is crucial. Only by choosing the right location can we ensure our tent is safe. Below, I'll outline methods for selecting a camping spot.
If you find yourself on higher, open ground, move downhill; if the area is low-lying and damp, move uphill. The ideal location should be elevated enough to offer protection from wind and rain, safe from flash floods, and free from the threat of falling rocks or avalanches.
Warm air is less dense than cold air, so cold air often pools in valley bottoms. When temperatures drop, this can easily lead to the formation of damp fog and frost. In some areas, rainwater-collecting terraces line slopes, creating damp patches while other sections remain relatively dry.
An ideal spot should also be near water sources with ample usable timber nearby. Avoid pitching too close to water—mosquitoes will swarm, and flowing water may drown out danger signals, potentially missing rescue teams.
Identify the flood level along the riverbank—mountain streams can transform into raging torrents within minutes of heavy rain, with water levels rising five meters within an hour! On flat, open terrain, floods may even overflow the riverbed. Torrential rain on surrounding mountains can swiftly and without warning unleash a surging flood toward you. Choose a location that is flat and free of large rocks, providing ample space to send distress signals and making it easier for rescuers to spot you.
